Without thinking, the crystals activated on the gauntlet, my arm flew from body, away from everyone and opened a portal. On the other side was my beautiful Nyssa. My loving Nyssa. Heart racing, I sprinted to her and took my beautiful nymph in my arms. Holding her close, I kissed her passionately and with longing. I pulled away to look her in the eyes. “I am as serious as love itself.” Then I ran my fingers over her ear. Her eyes went wide, and she stuttered a question.

“You...you know what that means?” Her eyes welled with unshed tears.

“I do. I promise,” I said, kissing her again.

Behind me, the portal was still open. I knew this because six onlookers responded to my romantic moment with a chorus of “Awww.” Mocking me for my earlier dorkiness.

I just smiled and held my Nyssa, feeling complete in that moment. Her soft warmth against me was grounding, making me feel more connected than I had ever been. After what felt like hours of holding her and rubbing her belly, I knew I needed to head back to the group. But I had a few questions first, driven by my curiosity. I am a curious guy, after all.

I placed a hand gently under her chin, tilting her face up to mine. I placed another of a dozen kisses on her lips before asking, “Nyssa, will this be okay with your partner?”

“Will what be okay?” she asked, her brow furrowing slightly in confusion, her eyes slit and glazed.

“You being a part of, well, us,” I said, waving a hand at the group standing on the other side of the portal.

“Oh, yeah, about that.” She blushed shyly and looked down, her cheeks turning a delicate darker shade of red. “There is no one else. I didn’t want anyone to worry about me being lonely, so I just made that up.” Her voice quivered as her eyes brimmed with unshed tears.

“Well, I can understand that. I’ve told a few white lies in the past myself. The same kind of lies. It’s hard, I understand,” I said softly, trying to soothe her.

“I’m glad you understand,” she said, hugging my waist again. Her eyes sparkled with happiness as her tail swished about happily. “What was your other question, honey?”

“How long do nymphs take to have a baby?”

“Oh, well, usually it’s a three-month gestation. This may be different since you’re almost a giant.” She giggled and poked my side playfully. I kissed her again, savoring the sweetness of the moment, and then stepped back through the portal to rejoin the group.

“Wow! Three months? That’s quick. Humans are nine months.” Then I added. “Hey, what do you think of Maximus for a boy’s name and Trouble for a girl?” My question caused her jaw to drop.

“Why is the girl Trouble?” she asked, her fists on her hips as I closed the portal, laughing.

“You do realize she will get her revenge when you return?” Maelis said with a laugh as I settled back into the camp.
